Fixed depths instruments platform VS profiling moorins and wire-following profiler in cabled observatories?

I would like to start a discussion about water column observation platform here, please give your kindly comments, thanks.

I personally favourite fixed depth instrument platform in cabled observatories, it has advantages wire-following or profiling moorings.

It has “unlimited” power for instruments

It has broadband (at least higher speed) communication

It is more reliable as there is no moving mechanical part

It has much higher temporal resolution

Ocean Observatories Initiative(OOI) Science Plan: Exciting Opportunities using OOI Data (version Jan 2021) page 79:

“fixed instruments at a limited number of depths on a mooring line were not sufficient to capture many aspects of ocean variability.”
Does this statement is truth for cabled observatory?

I work primarily on shallow profilers in the cabled array (200m - 10m, 9 profiles per day). I find the water column characterization at meter-resolution to be a very interesting signal; particularly in light of the plethora of sensors. My work is open source and if there is interest I can provide a link to it (Python). best -rob fatland

Hi Rob,
very interesting, at what depth that meter-resolution is very interesting? does these interesting signal happened at every profile? how can you indicate that these interesting signal depending on depth not time change?

please give me a link, I am happy to see it.
Tom

The repo is here but a better look at what is going on is at this link.

Hi Rob,
it is interesting profile, the sharp change from surface to about 100m depth, does this patten keeps for a long period of time?

if scientists interested this layer very much, we possible put more (20 or more) sensors in this layer and can get high time resolution data.
