Height of VEL3D sensors on RCN

Hi OOI,

I’m looking for the height at which seafloor 3-D velocity measurements are taken. Specifically, for the VEL3D instruments at Slope Base and Hydrate Ridge:

  • Slope Base (RS01SLBS-MJ01A-12-VEL3DB101)
  • Hydrate Ridge (RS01SUM1-LJ01B-12-VEL3DB104)

As far as I can tell online, the actual measurement is taken ~1 m above the seafloor. Is the exact height of the measurement (above the seafloor) known?

Thanks so much!

Hello Zoe,

Received this answer from Dana (manalang@uw.edu) at UW:

These velocity instruments are mounted to tripods on the seafloor. The sensor end sits about 1m above the seabed.
